Covenant University Expose Goals for 2015/2016 Academic Session
This is to notify important student of this institution that the Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University, Professor Charles Ayo has revealed that “Innovation, Product Development and Nation Building” would be the goal of the University for the 2015/2016 Academic Session, which would commence in August.
This was revealed on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at the University, while addressing a World Press Conference to mark the 10th Convocation Ceremony.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that the University had accomplished the goal for the 2014/2015 Academic Session which was “Innovation, Impact and Internationalisation” in grand style.
“Indeed, we have innovated, impacted our community and internationalized our operations. Thus, our goal for the year has been accomplished in grand style. By the grace of God, in the 2015/2016 Academic Session, home-grown tangible and intangible products shall emerge from the University to solve the myriad of problems that the Nation is faced with,” Professor Ayo promised.
The Vice-Chancellor, in the address, enumerated various achievements of the University from inception. He noted that Covenant University introduced Entrepreneurial education into the curricula of university education in Nigeria. The University also introduced the abolition of pass degree. All of these had been adopted by the National Universities Commission (NUC) for all Nigerian universities. He further stated that the University introduced the award of Certificate/Diploma in Leadership to the graduates alongside the degrees in their primary disciplines.
On the vision 10:2022, Professor Ayo explained that after her first 10 years, the University needed to move towards joining the league of world-class universities which culminated in the birth of the vision and evolvement of 8- point agenda to accomplish the feat.
A recent feat, according to him, was the introduction of Mobile Learning into the teaching process that engenders learning anywhere and anytime on campus.
“This is a great feat and first –of –its -kind in the country. Thanks to the ubiquitous internet facility and the 24/7 electricity supply on campus. Now, all the students have these tablets loaded with courseware ready to optimize learning at the cutting edge of ICT”.
Covenant University had also engaged three Nobel Laureates in the two editions of the University’s International Conference on African Development Issues (CU-ICADI) as Keynote Speakers. “With this annual assemblage of great minds, we are succeeding in proffering solutions to African Development Issues. By God’s grace, we will not relent until we redeem the lost glory of the Continent,” Professor Ayo noted.
The Vice Chancellor informed the audience that the University in the past three years has expanded her frontiers beyond the national borders, with numerous awards and recognitions. Covenant University was ranked overall best University in Nigeria and West Africa as well as number 15 in Africa on the Webometrics Ranking.
The University, also ranked number one in Web of Repositories in Nigeria and West Africa, it has highest lisiting of 78 out of the first 500 leading Nigerian Scientist listed by Cybermetrics and the First-class graduates of the University emerged tops in the Presidential Special Scholarship Scheme for Innovation and Development (PRESSID) in all three editions by producing at least 10% a piece.
Other achievements of the University as listed by the Vice-Chancellor include; hosting three scholars of Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship and two Fulbright Fellows. Also, the University and her faculty registered 11 patents, 7 trademarks and 14 patents are awaiting approval at the NOTAP office.
Products by the University research base include Integrated Dual–Powered Mobility Engine tagged CU-IDEA, Afroscholar Project, Mini Smart Home Solar Electricity Generator, Fermented Rice Products (farm Rice), Power of Influence (a public speaking board game) and Interactive Kiosks (which offers self-service in the areas of hotel accommodation, transport, telecommunication and tourism).
Covenant University under its linkages and collaborations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a number of foreign and local institutes such as Wayne State University, USA; EISTI, France; The Chattered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria and Songhai Regional Centre, among others.
Under her Community Development Impact, the University has offered free medical services to over 232 people at Ilobi Village, Ado-Ota LGA; Commissioning and dedication of a 500 KVA transformer to the Agoro Community at Onigbongbo, Atan, Ota.
During the 2014/2015 Academic Session, the University hosted 13 conferences and workshops that attracted scholars from within and outside the country. These include International Conference on Demography and Economic Development, Launch of UN Global Report on Human Settlement, 6th Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Incorporation, Future Ready University Conference, among others.
The University also celebrated her alumni called “Eagles” who the Vice-Chancellor said are found in various fields of human endeavors, making quality contributions to nation building. According to him, they are found in business, careers, higher educational institutions and community engagements.
“From the score card presented across all parameters, I wish to state without equivocation that Covenant University is a future ready university, having future ready students and producing future ready graduates that compete favorably well anywhere in the world” Professor Ayo declared.
